AN agitated Samuel Egadu romped to victory in the 200m to highlight the MTN Western Athletics championships on Saturday at Kakyeka stadium.

After being disqualified in the 400m for a false start, Egadu took a rest and came back to clock 22.1 seconds to win the 200m event.
Winners in the 100m (Kassim Latigo) and 400m (Waisswa Lukungu) followed, finishing in 22.4 and 22.7 respectively.

Makerere University’s Isaac Bisaru (4:08.8) lost to Police’s Noah Owori (4:04.5) in the 1500m event where the top runners got cash prizes courtesy of MTN.

But the poor track affected sprinters who were targeting qualifying for the All Africa Games, as they posted slow times, while the throws were out done by the wind, which saw most of the field athletes record poor distances.

“We hope to post better times at the national championships in Namboole. It is good that we are going to run on tartan,” said Emily Nanziri, who won both the 100m and 400m events.

The event was the last national trial on the athletics calendar and focus now turns to the national athletics championships July 7-8 at Mandela National Stadium Namboole.
