STDs high in Kalangala

KALANGALA-The district director of health services, Hillary Bitakaramire, is worried by the high rate at which sexually transmitted diseases are spreading in the fishing communities of Ssese Islands. He told journalists on Sunday that most of the residents were not using condoms yet “they are fond of having sex.” He pointed out that every 150 men on the island were sharing about 100 women and revealed that girls in the district get sexually active at the age of 11. The area MP, Fred Badda, urged the Government to re-package the Engabu condoms, saying the earlier perception that the condoms were sub-standard had stuck in people’s minds.

Forester honoured

MUKONO-The National Agricultural Research Organisation has honoured Dr. John. Aluma, its fallen former deputy director-general. Denis Kyetere, the director general, said Aluma led a tree-planting campaign on 1,000 ha of land, now named Kifu central forest reserve. “We will all die one day, but we should leave behind a legacy. Aluma was a great forester. We should now uphold his fight to conserve forests,” he said last week while commissioning an information center at the National Forestry Resources Research Institute named after Aluma. The sh160m facility will keep data on tree species and forest management.
