ARCHIBISHOPS Henry Orombi and John Sentamu are among the seven candidates so far nominated for Makerere university chancellor.

They join Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya and former general duties minister Prof. Mondo Kagonyera in the race.

Orombi is the head of the Anglican Church in Uganda, while Ssentamu is the Archbishop of York.

The other candidates are Prof. Victoria Mwaka, former vice-chancellor Prof. John Sebuwufu and former university council chairman and Entebbe Municipality MP David Byatike Matovu.

A source on the Chancellor Search Committee confirmed that the six had been duly nominated for the university’s top non-administrative post. The chancellor presides over graduation ceremonies and receives awards on behalf of the university.

The Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act was amended in 2003 to give powers to the university to elect a chancellor. Previously, a sitting president was the automatic chancellor.

Outgoing chancellor Prof. Apolo Nsibambi was the first non-president to hold the office. He leaves office in August.

Bukenya was nominated by a group of former Makerere university students, while Kagonyera was nominated by a senior Cabinet minister.

Nominations are open until July 12 when a five-member committee will present three names to the university council for voting.

The committee will consult about the nominated candidates and develop a scoring system.

It will shortlist and interview not more than six candidates.

The council will send one name to the Visitor (the President) for appointment.

Stephen Maloba chairs the search committee, which started work on June 6.

Other members are Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, representing the academic staff, Bruce Balaba Kabaasa for the Convocation, Christine Kiganda for the University Council and the public and Shifra Lukwago for the staff and local government.

To be considered for chancellor, a person should be a citizen of Uganda between 55 and 75 years, have at least a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution and be a person of high integrity and standing.
