SISTER CHARITY

Sister Charity Kyobutungi of the Grade fame is a Mbarara-based musician who co-owns Rays Band with her husband Charles Lwanga aka Rasta Charz. Their affair started in secondary school at Train the Youth Efforts, Masheruka in Bushenyi district. They have been together for over seven years and have two children. Pidson Kareire talked to them.

In your song Grade, you seem to suggest that poor men should not love rich women. Are you a snob?
I don’t think so. I know everyone has feelings, but let us be realistic. A cart pusher cannot date an MP! By the way, when it happens, the inequality causes domestic problems. People who go for their class face less or no problems.

You have consistently sang about love. Have you been a victim of a bad relationship?
No. (Laughs) In fact, I am an example of a happy marriage. Besides, most of my songs are about family relationships. I only talk about love on the current album. I say love is the most precious thing on earth. Some people think of money and wealth. You can have all that, but if you are not loved, you will be miserable.

What do you find disturbing about love?
Like any other precious thing; it is the source of problems. Too much of love leads to death and lack of it can also cause death.

Many people despise rasta men. What did you look for in him?
Rastas may give a bad impression, but they make good husbands. First of all, they are loving and faithful.
Secondly, they are the opposite of what people think about them. For example, Rasta Charz does not drink and has never taken drugs. He is a definition of true love.

What is the most annoying thing men do?
Men are like children; they are easily taken up. They are attracted by small things; even an ugly creature but with a convincing feature can disorganise a man who is walking with his beautiful wife!
Actually, almost all men are cheats. A man will be humble when he has no money, but when he becomes rich, he will want more women.
Has anyone ever cheated on you?
It is obvious. Men think women will look down upon them if they do not cheat.

Is it the reason why you composed Pen Yaawe?
No. The song is about the society as a whole. It was the situation in our society that inspired me to compose the song, but not a personal experience.

How do you keep your ‘Pen’ safe?
I make sure I am committed to him and show him care. Men are grown up babies who only need care. If you give a man care you will win his heart forever. That is my tool for love.

Would you cheat on him if you met a hot hunk?
No. I made up my mind so that no one will ever be more handsome than Charz. I can’t imagine betraying my children.

RASTA CHARZ

eople say artistes are not faithful lovers. Why did you go for Charity?
That’s a baseless lie. It has no proof. We have been together since our secondary school days and I have not even suspected any trace of unfaithfulness. I met her before she had started singing when we were students.
Right from the beginning, I liked her behaviour and she has never changed. Besides, she is beautiful.

Does she allow you to look through her mobile phone?
She hides nothing from me. Sometimes, she passes her phone to me to talk to her secret admirers.

She sang about class. Where do you think you fall?
(Laughs) I am the right choice. I fall in her class, of course. We are in the same class and we don’t regret our love.

What makes your relationship tick?
We never suspect each other. So, when there is a misunderstanding, we easily make up.

Do you pay attention to her songs?
Yes. I edit her songs and listen to them before they are released to the public. I admire her creativity.

What have you learnt from her songs?
I learn from her fans when I see them nodding to her songs and I realise that she has touched them. I like it when the public uses one word or a line to correct their mistakes. When I have a problem and I listen to any of the songs, I always get a solution.

Have you ever felt jealous when fans get close to her?
No. Our love has a strong foundation. It cannot be shaken by scarecrows. I know her very well. She cannot compromise her integrity for the sake of fans.

She sang about a housegirl betraying her mistress. Was it about you?
(Laughs) The song is not about me. It is about other randy men. I don’t think I can do that. If I do, she has room to sing the truth.
