THE Government is to start an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) course at Busitema University, this year.
Francis Lubanga, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, said that the move was aimed at improving the ICT sector in the country.

“The 21st Century is characterised by a lot of application of science and technology in everyday life. There is now overwhelming importance and use of ICT in the modern society,” Lubanga said.
He noted that education is the single most important factor for development and wealth creation. “It is therefore imperative for all teachers and students to become familiar with, and accept ICT in everyday use,” he explained.

Lubanga said that a project to support schools with ICT infrastructure is about to start with the support of the Uganda Communicati-ons Commission. “Almost 100 schools and institutions will benefit, with each school receiving 10 computers and others printers,” he explained.

Lubanga was speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for Kyambogo College’s refurbishment centre recently. Present was David Sogan, the Digital Links International Chief Executive.
The Ministry of Education and Sports, in conjunction with Digital Links International, will construct the centre, that will cost sh200m.

Digital Links International is a UK-based company that offers information technology disposal services, refurbishing computers for reuse in the developing countries.

The ICT centre will provide affordable revamped computers to schools, provide technical training to schools’ IT coordinators, teachers and students.
Lubanga said the centre will develop marketable skills among students graduating from secondary schools, and provide industrial training and internship for students from higher institutions.

Sogan lauded the Government for their good partnership with the private sector. He promised continued assistance to Uganda’s schools in the ICT sector.
