FRESH Ugandan graduates have voted the telecommunications sector the preferred employer. This was in a survey conducted by Exquisite Solution Ltd, an education consultancy firm in Kampala, 1,312 graduates and final-year students were asked to state the companies they “die” to work for and why.

Four of the telecommunications companies were ranked highest among the 50 top corporate companies. MTN Uganda was ranked best with 15.6%, followed by Celtel with 15.6% and Uganda Telecom 11%.

PriceWaterHouse Coopers, which for three consecutive years emerged first in the top 100 graduate employers survey by the London Times, ranked 15th.
Over 67% said training opportunities and job security were the main reasons for their choices. Others mentioned company success, salaries and “interesting work tasks.”

The New Vision is the top media company that many young graduates seek to join, the survey revealed.

It showed that 5.3% of respondents chose The New Vision as the ideal career place.

The New Vision’s Human Resources Manager, Caroline Mboijana, yesterday said the graduates’ perception of The New Vision as a quality employer is based on their interaction with friends and society who have graduated and have actually had an opportunity to work there. “In addition, employees at The New Vision have also contributed to this perception by becoming good ambassadors for the organisation.

Part of this is due to the fact that we offer reasonably good benefits in comparison to what is on the market and considering the staff population.” Exquisite Solution business manager Abdul Kasom said: “Employers wanted to have a feel of what graduates think of them; why they are or aren’t interested in working with them. This will help them improve employee relations.”
Only 2% of those interviewed were keen to be self-employed, while 1% were not sure of what they wanted.

Exquisite Solution’s team of researchers and consultants has undertaken projects for Makerere University Institute of Languages, United Nations Development Programme, the Inspectorate of Government and International Law Institute.
