I cannot stop thinking about sex
Dear Doctor,
Everyday, I think about having sex though I am a virgin. Am I normal?
Daniel

I have much lust for sex, but I am still under age. I want to have sex whenever I see a girl. Will masturbation harm my life?
Rogers, Wakiso

Dear Daniel and Rogers,
as we grow from childhood to adulthood, we pass through a stage known as puberty. This is when your body begins to change. You grow in size and develop the secondary sexual characteristics (beard, pubic hair, voice changes.
These changes are caused by the production of sexual hormones, which prepare the boy or girl to become a fertile person, capable of having children. They are also responsible for changes in thinking. You start thinking about sex and getting attracted to the opposite sex. You also find that rubbing your genitals leads to orgasm (masturbation). From the medical point of view, masturbation has no harm and is part of puberty. As adults, you learn how to express your sexual desires in a good way. It is a challenging time of growth and development. Do not get scared. If you have any problem, talk to an adult you trust.

Does back pain need surgery?
Dear Doctor,
I am 18 years old. I have severe pain on the line of my backbone. It started after I fell down. I get pain while seated. Does this need spinal surgery?
N

Dear N,
The backbone is made up of several smaller bones sitting on each other in a column. It takes a lot of weight and stress during life. Any injury, especially after falling, can damage the arrangement of the bones. The spinal cord passes in the middle of these bones for protection. If there is a problem with the bones, they can injure this very important nerve column. You should see a doctor for diagnosis such that treatment is started. I cannot say whether you will need an operation, but it is important that the cause of the pain is established.

I have recurring candida
Dear Doctor,
I am 25 years old and I have had candida for a long time. I have seen many gynaecologists, but the problem keeps coming back. Please help!
Diana

Dear Diana,
Candida is a fungus which stays on our skin. Some conditions make it to overgrow and cause symptoms. Usually, it can be quickly treated. If it is recurrent, we look for a reason why it is doing so. This may be caused by diabetes, HIV or frequent use of antibiotics. See a doctor for the diagnosis. If no reason is found for the frequent attacks, your gynaecologist may recommend weekly prophylaxis medicine. Candida can be controlled, even in cases when it seems to re-occur.
