THE Uganda Rugby Cranes arrived yesterday in Lusaka, Zambia, hoping to continue their magical run in international rugby. Tomorrow will see the final games of the initial round of the Confederation of African Rugby Africa Cup, the continents premier competition.

A win against Zambia will mean Uganda will qualify for the semi-finals to be played next month with a chance to become Africa’s top rugby nation outside South Africa.

“After the win against Namibia some people may think a semi-final place is already in the bag, but we cannot underrate Zambia. it is a difficult team to beat at home,” a rugby official who did not want to be identified said. “We just have to hope we can beat them and proceed to the next level.”

Uganda is currently in second position in South Pool A, with four points, behind Namibia which has six. Zambia lost to Namibia 10-83, while Namibia lost to Uganda 19-20. So a simple win in Lusaka will mean Uganda tops the pool.

In other games, Kenya travels to Yaoundé after upsetting Morocco 23-19 two weeks ago. Morocco beat Cameroon 20-6 in Casablanca, so a win for Kenya, or even a draw, will take them to the semi-finals.

Other contenders are Cote d’Ivoire and Tunisia in North Pool B, both with four points from wins against Senegal. They face off in Abidjan, while Madagascar will qualify with a win over Zimbabwe.

Madagascar has 4 points after CAR awarded them the win over South African Amateurs for their un-played game. But if Zimbabwe wins, the South Africans go through.
