Okumu, Aswa is not your property!

SIR— I was intrigued by an article published on Monday that Reagan Okumu wants to replace Kizza Besigye as leader of FDC. I will not comment on Okumu’s ambitions because that is the affair of the FDC’s delegates’ conference.

Secondly, all Ugandans will also test his suitability through the general elections. Okumu says besigye should retire when he is still young but forgets that he too has been the MP for Aswa county for
much longer than Besigye has led FDC.

I think he too should retire. He reminds me of the Luo saying: “Ayom ma dong cen, nyero yib lawote” (the monkey that follows another laughs at its long tail forgeting its own). As to whether he has been an effective MP, should be left to the people of Aswa county.

His appeal that the people in the north should not panic is misguided. It is as if his pronouncement to lead FDC has caused a lot of stampede in the whole of northern Uganda.

Whereas we know that a number of politicians from other parts of the country are actively involved in the Juba peace efforts, Okumus participation is visibly below the mark. Apart from himself, i doubt any Ugandan ever noticed his presidential ambitions.

The biggest insult to the voters of Aswa is for him to claim that he has anointed his successor for the Aswa seat if he takes over the leadreship of FDC in 2011. Okumu, what makes you think Aswa county belongs to you?
