THE prospect of having musicians performing in Lira is always attractive to folk there. But, for some of those musicians to be from Kampala is something else. This is what will happen when the Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM) launch in Lira tomorrow.

The northern regional launch concert sponsored by Celtel Uganda and Bell Lager will be held at Lira Hotel. Lira revellers will pay sh5,000 to watch artistes like Bebe Cool, Kid Fox, Priscilla Kalibala, homeboy DJ Languna, the Stingers and a host of artistes who hail from northern Uganda.

The concert starts at 6.00pm and, like the Jinja launch, will have a fireworks display. Last year, chaos reigned at the entrance as revellers fought to enter the venue and catch a glimpse or two of the Kampala artistes.

The attempt by military security personnel to quell the situation did not help much. Not being used to the presence of so many artistes at a go, was one of the reasons some fronted as the cause of the stampede.

It was little wonder that the Lira crowd beat the record as the biggest crowd to attend a PAM Awards launch in 2006. There must have been well over 5,000 in that arena and way after 1:00am, the pushing at the gate was still going on.

At that time, the battle for northern music fans' hearts clearly lay between BSG Labongo, a hip-hop Gospel artiste, DJ Laguna and Loketo Lee, who stripped to his underwear just to make a statement!

Other impressive performances came in from Dogman (Lira) Angella Emeeta and The Messengers of Christ (Lira); Bosmic (Arua); Andrea (Ogwang Andrew), and Jimmy Abila (Lira). Who will it be this time?
