The late inclusion of bantamweight fighter Attanus Mugerwa will boost Uganda’s chances of winning medals at the All Africa Games that start tomorrow.

Mugerwa is the most experienced boxer on the Bombers squad but has had his progress hampered by indiscipline. He was dismissed from the boxing camp last week after he disobeyed team orders and ended up 2kgs overweight.

The teenage pugilist has had a series of problems with the technical staff over his weight and coach Musa Kent says that unless he improves, there is no way his undisputed talent in the ring will be exposed.

Mugerwa reached the quarter-finals at the last games in Abuja, and along with fellow Africa Boxing championship bronze medalist Sharif Bogere, will lead the country’s hunt for medals.

“I am very happy that he has finally made it. He (Mugerwa) is one of our best boxers,” remarked Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation official Sande Musoke.

Mugerwa, who cut weight to the expected 54kg at the weekend, was part of the second batch of Ugandans that left on Sunday and was slated to arrive in Algiers last night.

Others on the Bombers squad are Ronald Serugo (l/fly), Phillip Adyak (flyweight), Ismail Muwendo (featherweight), Bogere (lightweight) and Fred Muhumuza (l/welter).

Boxing action starts on Saturday.
