BADMINTON singles player Edwin Ekiring has finally given Uganda something to smile about. Ekiring showed the benefit of his Olympic Solidarity training in Germany by beating the top seed from Nigeria, Greg Okonghae — on his way to the medal-bracket semi-finals.

Like in boxing — where Uganda had a rather forgettable campaign — there are four medals won in badminton with the semifinal losers assured of bronze.

Ekiring will today take on Elli Mambwe in the last four to try and get into the gold and silver medal bracket.
Mambwe (ranked 139th in the world) and Ekiring (133) are both Olympic scholarship beneficiaries in Germany.

“I told him to engage Willem Viljoen in an attacking game and he did exactly that,” Ekiring’s coach Simon Mugabi said.

+Commonwealth 10,000m champion Boniface Kiprop will be seeking his first All Africa Games medal at 10pm tonight. He finished fourth in 2003.

Earlier, a muscle pull had sprinter Stephen Odwar failing to advance from the 100m heats. Benjamin Kiplagat was also blown away by the 3000m SC field.
