HEALTH training institutions have been urged to produce quality workers who can compete at the international level.

The director general of health services, Dr. Sam Zaramba, on Monday told participants at the 3rd Annual Principals’ Conference at Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe that unlike workers in other sectors, health workers dealt with life hence the need to ensure high quality standards.

He called for the increased collaboration between the ministries of health and education in order to develop quality human resources.

“We must appreciate the symbiotic nature of the two sectors and harness it to our benefit in terms of a well-trained health work force. I, therefore, urge the Ministry of Education to provide training materials to avoid a scenario of a nurse, for instance, entering a ward when he/she cannot use a thermometer,” said Zaramba.

The conference was aimed at sharing experiences in management issues and updating the participants on the current policies regarding the training of human resource for health.

Dr. Jane Egau Okou, the principal education officer in the education ministry, said they were concerned about the negative attitude to work by some health workers.

“Attitude alone can cure a patient even before you administer a drug,” she noted.
Participants from Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi and Uganda noted that the existing gap between researchers and policy-makers further hindered the use of research findings.

“Researchers are path-finders. They have the tools and the knowledge to find out the weak points of the enemy so as to provide evidence-based solutions.

Unfortunately, their efforts are not utilised because they and policy-makers do not talk to each other,” said Dr. Gabriel Upunda, the chief executive REACH Policy Initiative, an East African initiative involved in promoting evidence-based health policies.
