NYAPEA College, one of the oldest secondary schools in West Nile, needs renovation and more teachers to improve the quality of education.

Leonard Odinga, the head teacher, said most of the buildings, constructed in 1940, are leaking.

“The administration block, classrooms and staff houses need renovation. Teachers are living in very poor conditions,” Odinga said while receiving a microscope from Prince Lawrence Opar Angala, the prime minister of Alur-Kaal Kingdom, recently.

Odinga said the school lacks teachers, especially for science subjects, which has affected the students’ performance.
“We only have five science teachers for both O and A’ Level,” Odinga said.

He said the school administration is trying to recruit more teachers, whose salaries would be paid by the Parents-Teachers Association.

Odinga said the school also lacks textbooks because most of them were destroyed by the rain, since the library roof leaks.

He said the school has one borehole, which also serves the neighbouring communities, including the nearby Nyapea Hospital.

Angala appealed to parents, well-wishers and old boys to rescue the formerly famous school where one of the country’s presidents, Dr Milton Obote, went.
