Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya on Saturday attended the pre-wedding
luncheon for his son who is set to marry a Kenyan. Richard Bukenya plans to wed Caroline Nyambura, the daughter of the Kenyan deputy secretary in the Ministry of Heritage, Anne Gakuria. At the ceremony, the vice-president downplayed the constant attacks on the Pokot by soldiers suspected to be from the Uganda’s People Defence Force (UPDF). The latest attack was last Wednesday where three Pokots died and one child was injured. The UPDF allegedly raided Alale where they confiscated 500 head of cattle and drove them to the barracks in Uganda. However, Bukenya said such attacks are expected in areas harbouring communities with heterogeneous interests. “This is a village fight. The use of the word insurgency by the Kenyan media was misplaced. This cannot be regarded as an insurgency.” In a bid to discourage cross border conflicts, Bukenya said the Government would enact a law to punish citizens found in possession of guns.

‘Seya tricked the public’

The promise of city buses was a mere “campaign tool” by Kampala mayor Nasser Ntege Sebaggala to hoodwink the public, a senior government minister has disclosed. “As far as I am concerned, the Government has never promised to bring any buses. The buses were promised by Kampala mayor and as we all know, it may never materialise. Those were just campaigns,” urban state minister Urban Tibamanya told journalists at the Media Centre on Friday.
