<b>Nambooze in prison<br></b>MUKONO - The Democratic Party spokesperson, Betty Nambooze, was yesterday charged with inciting violence. Prosecution led by Edward Tweheyo also accused Nambooze and four others of participating in a riot and an unlawful assembly.

MUKONO - The Democratic Party spokesperson, Betty Nambooze, was yesterday charged with inciting violence. Prosecution led by Edward Tweheyo also accused Nambooze and four others of participating in a riot and an unlawful assembly. They denied the charges before Grade One Magistrate Jessy Byaruhanga. Despite being granted bail, Nambooze was returned to Kawuga Prison because her bail plea was granted after the banks had closed. Her sureties, Donald Muguluma and Cissy Nansamba, were asked to pay sh500,000. Nambooze’s co-accused, Hamisi Mbazira, Fred Kiyimba, Vincent Kitimbi, Ivan Ofumbi and Yuda Sekagya lacked sureties.

Explosion at Barclays Bank
KAMPALA - An explosion occurred at the Barclays Bank main branch on Kampala Road yesterday. The Central Police Station chief, Johnson Wadadha, said a gas cylinder caused the explosion. “The system broke down and the cylinder exploded.” The cylinder was part of the bank’s power support system. “There were no deaths or injuries reported. A few ceiling boards were damaged,” Wadadha said.

2 PRA suspects denied bail
MBARARA - The two Peoples’ Redemption Army (PRA) suspects, who were facing murder charges, were yesterday denied bail by the High Court. Prosecution alleged that Frank Atukunda, Robert Tweyambe and Joseph Kifefe Musasizi, murdered John Byarugaba in Bushenyi in 2002. The Principal State Attorney, Vincent Okwang, opposed the bail application, saying investigations were ongoing.

Security bosses appointed
KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed Dr. Amos Mukumbi as the head of the Internal Security Organisation (ISO). The senior Presidential Adviser and Coordinator for Security Services, Gen. David Tinyefuza, yesterday said Dr. Robert Masolo had been appointed the director general of the External Security Organisation. Masolo replaced Maku Iga. The new deputy ESO director general is Emmy Allio. “The ISO deputy director general is Ronnie Barya,” Tinyefuza added.

MPs summon Butabika boss
KAMPALA - The parliamentary committee on social services has summoned the Butabika Hospital executive director, Dr. Fred Kigozi, over reports that some patients were declared mentally ill when they have not been tested. The committee, chaired by the Bunya East MP James Kubeketerya, wants the hospital staff to respond to allegations that a group of wrong-doers among the staff connive with the Police to declare some patients mad for selfish reasons. The MPs were yesterday scrutinising the Ministry of Health policy statement for the 2007/08 financial year.

AGOA gives sh1.6b

KAMPALA - Uganda is to benefit from the $875,000 (about sh1.6b) funding under the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA). A statement from the US State Department yesterday said the programme would promote the development of an agricultural science policy, teaching and research techniques.
