Inzzi, have your baby

I SAY SO - James Bakama

A LOT is being said about Dorcus Inzikuru .....that not only will she fail to defend her world title in Osaka next month because of problems with sinusitis, but that she might also be pregnant.

As an adult though, Inzzi reserves the right to decide when to get heavy.
But as my colleague Joseph Kabuleta puts it, as an elite runner who still has countless medals in her legs, the Arua gazelle owes herself and the nation a little more responsibility — if she is pregnant.

The issue here is timing. Why get pregnant in a year you are supposed to defend a lucrative world title?
Besides the title, the hefty cash prizes at stake would lure anyone. To most fans, Inzzi surely made a false start on this one.

There could however be another side to all this. Arua Municipality Member of Parliament Akbar Hussein Godi last week revealed that all is not rosy for the world champion.

According to Godi, Inzzi begs for sh20,000 bus fare to Arua whenever she is in Kampala.

That doesn’t make sense for someone who reportedly earned sh51m for winning the world title barely two years ago. That she was earning money on the lucrative European circuit long before and after her golden run in Helsinki, only further complicates the Inzikuru enigma.

If athletes like Davis Kamoga, who earned much less are leading comfortable lives a decade after their careers, why should Inzzi who is at her prime labour to get $10?

Inzikuru doesn’t strike me as a miser. The million dollar question therefore is where is the money she’s been earning for the past five years?

Could Inzzi’s decision not to compete in Osaka therefore be a protest against a sport where her rewards have not been commensurate to her sweat?

If that’s the case, I would also rather have my baby.
