STATE House has never directed the eviction of the residents around the perimeter wall of its premises in Entebbe, a press statement stated yesterday. It said Entebbe Municipal Council had misrepresented the facts.

“The leadership of the council was advised to retract the misrepresentation and issue a statement to correct the wrong impression created. It is surprising that to-date, the council has not complied,” the statement read.

The New Vision
on Friday reported that residents within a radius of 20 to 30 metres from the perimeter wall of State House Entebbe had been asked to vacate their houses ahead of the Commonwealth summit (CHOGM) in November.

The story was based on a notice issued by the Entebbe Municipal Council during a meeting on July 23. But State House clarified that the meeting was supposed to be about the beautification of the area ahead of CHOGM.

“A committee was set up comprising officials from the ministries of works and lands and Entebbe Municipal Council to make an on-spot inspection around the perimeter fence and advise residents on the need to beautify their homes,” the statement clarified.

“Entebbe Municipal Council was further advised to establish whether there were no encroachments on the ownership of properties and ascertain that the properties were built according to approved plans. It is apparent that at the meeting with the residents of the area, Entebbe Municipal Council misrepresented these facts.”

It added: “State House would like to assure all residents of the area to remain calm and continue with the exercise of beautifying their residences and surroundings.”
