SHOCK gripped residents of Bunga, a Kampala suburb, after a security guard ran amok and gunned down a UPDF officer at Breeze Pub on Thursday night.

The pub, located at Bunga trading centre, seven kilometres south east of Kampala, belongs to the deceased, Lieutenant Vincent Ahimbisibwe. Ahimbisibwe is a UPDF pay master attached to Bombo Army Barracks.

Police yesterday described the murder as “gruesome and disturbing.” Eye-witnesses said the suspected killer, whom Police identified as Ernest Opio, a private security guard with Swilla Security Group, was “furious” when he arrived at the bar.

“He first came around 5:00pm, peeped with an angry face, asked for the DJ and left. He then creturned after about 30 minutes, peeped and left. Finally he came just after our boss had arrived at 6.15pm,” said 17-year-old Kwesigwa Sheila, a kitchen attendant.

Kwesiga, who was by yesterday afternoon still shivering and recovering from the shock added, “The boss then went to the counter, arranged the pool table and inquired from his wife who was at the gate.”

Kwesiga said the deceased then went to the gate and asked what Opio wanted. “He murmured something we all couldn’t understand before we heard gun shots.”
Kampala Extra Region Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga said the motive of the murder is still not known.

“He shot Ahimbisibwe in the forehead and the bullet blew up his brain. Ahimbisibwe died on the spot. His body was taken to Mulago Hospital mortuary,” he said.

The suspect was arrested at his uncle’s home in Wabigalo, a Kampala suburb in Makindye Division at around 10:00pm.
