AS the 2007 Pearl of Africa Music (PAM), Awards regional shows came to a close, the central launch at Colline Hotel in Mukono, showed that upcountry artistes still have a long way to go if they are to appeal to the central market.

Most of them were ignored by the crowd because their music was not familiar.
However, Saturday’s Bell Lager and Celtel Uganda sponsored show was deservedly attended with no complaints about lack of seats. Many revellers came early and enjoyed every minute of the show.

Previously held in Kampala, it was the first time it was held in Mukono and a seven-minute fireworks display that sent many revellers scampering for safety in the hotel shrubs and under trees, ushered in the excitement. Record TV’s Lady Sandra, Ken Love and Radio Simba’s Evans Walusimbi (Kajongolo) were the event emcees.

The Stingerz dance group raised the mood with head-spins, somersaults, acrobatics and erotic moves, delighting the crowds. From there, Kalikwani, East Trouble Zone, Kid Fox, Ragga Compious, Sister Charity, Agatha Kafokko, Able 4, Grace (Ani Akumanyi), Dogman (clad in banana leaves) and Desire, held their own.

A notch higher were performances from Ronnie Banton, Sarah Zawedde, Ssebale (Kandongo Kamu artiste), Lyrical G, Rocky Giant, Ras Bosmic and Eng. Kateregga who graced the stage with fire poppers to sing Afunvuwe and Merida.

The show had plenty of impressive new talent drawn from earlier regional launches such as Lira’s B’fal (a female hip-hop artiste), Gospel singer Allen Majara(Mbarara), Claudio Paulson(Fort Portal), Ayub Khan, Rub-a dub (Mbarara), Maureen and Ogaba.

In her trademark short dresses, Iryn Namubiru who had her mum back stage, was saved for last. Some people had already left, but she did her best to please those who were around.

On the low side of things, Priscilla Kalibala forgot her CD, so she sang songs unknown to the audience and called it a bad night. Qute Kaye showed up, but disappeared without singing. Up next are nominations of contenders from media and artistes.

The main event is slated for November 3 at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
