TESO artistes cried foul after they were barred from performing during the MTN-sponsored celebrations to mark the 8th anniversary of Voice of Teso (VOTE) radio at Soroti Sports Grounds recently.

This caused a momentary stand-off between VOTE staff and MTN-sponsored MCs minutes after the chief guest, His Highness Papa Iteso, Augustine Osuban Olemukol Adugala, gave his speech at 6:00pm.

Just a handful of Soroti-based artistes had the opportunity to curtain raise before the arrival of the chief guest. Eastern Pearl of Africa Music Awards artiste of the year, Mark ‘P’, but only after a long and heated debate. Even then, he was not allowed as much time on stage as his Kampala counterparts.

“That’s why Teso artistes will never develop. It is true that Kampala artistes are popular, but we should have also been given a chance to perform as a way of promoting ourselves,” said one of the disgruntled Teso-based artistes.

Artistes from Kampala who performed included Sarah Short, Mariam Ndagire, Sarah Zawedde, Bobi Wine, Butcher Man, Obsessions, Sweet Kid, General Mega Dee, General Ragga Dee, Nubian Lee, Chagga, Ronald Mayinja, Geoffrey Lutaaya, Juliana Kanyomozi and Lady Mariam.

The turn-up was massive. Some revellers rode bicycles from Kaberamaido and Katakwi. By noon, the grounds were filled to capacity. The function started at 4:00pm, two hours later than it was slated to begin.

The beautiful lady artistes from Kampala with very smooth skins mesmerised the villagers.
