Tax-payers got sh158b in refunds from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) last financial year.
The payment was sh74.1b above the budget for the 2006/07 financial year.

“Total payments amounted to sh158b. On a cumulative basis, this represents a growth rate of 131.1% from 2005/06,” said a report.

The major refunds were sh76.2b for Value Added Tax (VAT), sh62.1b for power generation duty, sh2.2b for informers and sh9.2b for customs tax.

VAT refunds and power generation duty refunds constituted the biggest percentage of the total refunds (80%), but customs tax refunds and informers registered the highest growth.
URA announced a sh70.3b surplus for the financial year 2006/07 after recording a net collection of sh2625.7b.

The performance was largely attributed to the above target cumulative collections.

During the year, domestic tax contributions dropped to 50.9% from 51.02%, while trade taxes increased to 48.9% from 48.2%.
Major tax lines which surpassed the targets include petroleum duty, excise duty and VAT on imports.
