CLASSICAL music enthusiasts on Sunday thronged Sheraton Hotel’s Lions Centre for a classical concert by the Kenya Conservatoire of Music Orchestra. The audience was treated to a rare musical spectacle of the 35-stong ensemble for three hours.

The combined sounds of the wind, string and percussion instruments produced a soothing effect, which carried the audience to the world of fantasy Members of the orchestra exhibited undisputable expertise as they performed Mozart’s Salzburg Symphony No. 1 in D Major and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E Flat Major, which our very own Fred Musoke Kiggundu conducted with understanding. Soloists Elizabeth and Zachary Njoroge also wowed the audience as they sang selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.

Another marvel at the concert were the Moipei Family Kids (a set of triplets and their sister), who produced swan-like sounds as they sang Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and the Irish pop tune By My Side. They also gave the concert an African touch with the rhythmic Luhya spiritual, Yesu Wainyanza.

Conductor Duncan Wambugu took the credit for directing the ensemble so well. The show also featured the Kampala Music School Chamber orchestra/choir. Kampala Music School organised the show, which was sponsored by Sheraton Hotel and College Inn.
