DUBBED East Africa’s premier social occasion, the Royal Ascot Goat Races is back with a bang.

The event, slated for September 1, at Speke Resort Munyonyo, is aimed at raising funds for charities and voluntary organisations in Uganda. Gates open at midday with adults paying sh10,000, while children under 14 will pay sh5,000.

Charity recipients for this year are still being finalised, but will include Katalemwa Cheshire Home who will receive the proceeds of the Tote about sh3m and Nsambya Babies Home who will receive sh1m on behalf of Nile Breweries. Last year’s beneficiaries included the Kids League, whose funds were used to expand sports programme in the internally displaced people’s camps and in the newly-established decongested villages.

Others included the Mama Bag Appeal, Salama School for the Blind, the Bakateyamba Home in Nalukolongo and Nsambya Babies Home.

A major change this year is that the owners and sponsors of tents have been re-introduced so that goat-owners and race sponsors can enjoy the day in a rather less crowded environment.

When one buys a goat, one is entitled to free hospitality in various tents.
The fun-packed day will include eight races and a variety of entertainment for adults and children. There will also be a variety of catering outlets offering a great selection of food and drink.

Every race has an entry of 10 goats. Each owner receives one wristband to the Crane Bank enclosure per sh100,000 spent on goats.

The goats are on sale from sh200,000 to sh600,000 each. Raffle tickets with high value prizes go for sh1,000 each.
