The race for the Ntoroko county by-elections has kicked off, with several National Resistance Movement (NRM) party bigwigs campaigning for their candidate, Dr. Chris Asiimwe.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Francis Mugarra in July.

The NRM deputy general secretary, Dorothy Hyuha, on Monday led a team of party officials to Karugutu sub-county, Bundibugyo district, to solicit support for Asiimwe.

Hyuha sympathised with the people over the loss of their MP and asked them to vote another NRM candidate.

“Death robbed you of a leader who had lobbied so much for services from the Government that only awaited implementation.

“As a party, we are required to fill the gap he left with an equally well bred person who will promote NRM activities in the area, ” she said.

The opposition politicians, Hyuha said, lacked viable programmes for the people.

“They are just making a lot of noise. They come here and lie to you about a road whose budget has already been approved.”

The poor state of the Fort Portal-Bundibugyo road has been a hot campaign issue, with opposition politicians using it to accuse the Government of neglect.

Hyuha also asked the people of Ntoroko to be patient over their demand for a district status.

Asiimwe promised to avoid divisive politics, promote education and address the problem of early marriages.

The other candidates for the seat are Misayiri Mukwenda (Democratic Party) and Amon Bazira (Forum for Democratic Change).
