PEOPLE deformed as a result of the LRA insurgency in the north will from today receive free treatment in a camp. The Gulu LC5 chairman, Nobert Mao, will launch the sh120m project in which seven hospitals from Gulu, Kitgum, Pader, Apac, Lira and Oyam districts will participate.

Martin Kiyaga, the country chair of the Rotary Club, on Saturday told journalists in Kampala that the medics will be assisted by seven volunteers from India.

Six of them are specialists in ophthalmology, plastic, orthopedic, urology, obstetrics and gynaecology and ear, nose and throat surgery.

“The Indian Rotarians have successfully completed similar projects in Tanzania, Lesotho and Swaziland.

“This is yet another mission of serving beyond the boundaries of India, which exemplifies Rotary’s ideal of ‘service above oneself’,” said Kiyaga.

Dr. Robert Ssentongo, a consultant at Mulago Hospital, said over 100 surgeons of various specialisation would also voluntarily assist.

He was optimistic that about 2,000 patients would turn up for treatment.
Ssentongo, who is also the camp leader, said the patients who require continued treatment would be referred to major hospitals.

Dr. Margaret Mungherera, one of the doctors on the camp, said Rotarians and well wishers had donated 120 litres of blood.

The camp is organised yearly by the Association of Surgeons of Uganda.
It is sponsored by the Uganda Medical Association, the Ministry of Health, Uganda Pharmaceutical Industries and Crane Bank.

It will be crowned by a conference for doctors on Friday at Lacor Hospital.
The theme for the event is “Access to Surgical Service.’
