MAKERERE University Council will today decide on who will be the next chancellor for the institution, writes Joyce Namutebi.

Only two candidates are left in the race: Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya and the National Social Security Fund deputy managing director, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera.

“The council is meeting today. It will vote on Bukenya and Kagonyera. The final candidate will be forwarded to the President,” a source told The New Vision yesterday.

Matthew Rukikaire, a former finance state minister, chairs the university council.
Bukenya and Kagonyera emerged the best candidates out of the seven people interviewed. Kagonyera led with 85.6%, while the vice-president scored 82.8%.

The interviewing committee considered factors like integrity, knowledge of local and international education issues, commitment to serve the university, the financial status, level of education and personality of the candidate.

Those who did not make it to the last round were the disaster preparedness minister, Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, former chairperson of the Constitutional Review Commission Prof. Frederick Ssempebwa and the former East African Community secretary general, Amanya Mushega. Also interviewed were Prof. Victoria Mwaka, a former MP for Luweero district and Prof. Sam Turyamuhika.

Bukenya, also the Busiro North MP, served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Makerere University from 1994 to 1996. He also once served as the state minister for the presidency and state minister for trade and industry.

Kagonyera, a veterinary doctor, worked as head of the department of clinical studies at Makerere University and later served as dean of the veterinary school before he joined politics.

The new chancellor will replace Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, who opted not to have his contract renewed. Nsibambi is also the Prime Minister. Neither Bukenya nor Kagonyera could be reached for a comment yesterday.
