IT was the least expected but only captain Lawrence Ssematimba and Ronald Ssemanda turned up when ACC were declared champions of the Castle cricket league on Saturday.

In a controversy that surrounded the crowning, a boardroom decision saw Tornado lose five points they got against ACC for failure to clear unspecified financial dues with Uganda Cricket Association (UCA).

The decision pushed ACC on top of the league table with 32 points with Tornado at 26 points in the five-club league.

“That is the official decision,” said UCA administrative officer Davis Turinawe.

The trophy was handed over by Nile Breweries Brand manager Tim Kayondo.

The event was also attended by National Council of Sports Chairman Anthony Katamba.

But Tornado did not go away empty handed.

Their star Joel Olweny scooped the man-of-the- series award.

Olweny beat another seasoned player Kenneth Kamyuka of Nile club in the highly contested race.

Both players had four wickets to their credit in fielding and picked 12 wickets each in bowling category.

Kamyuka bowled 53 overs compared to 25 for Olweny.

However, Olweny was on top in the batting category, averaging 60 runs compared to Kamyuka’s 48 to take an award.

Tornado captain Keith Legesi was named the best wicketkeeper while Benjamin Musoke was the best fielder.

Elsewhere, ACC Lawrence Ssematimba was the recognised as the best batsman and Waisswa Charles as the top bowler.

At the sametime, Wanderers who finished bottom of the league table still gave a chance to compete in the same division next year.

The former champions will take on Rounders who emerged winners in Division II in a play-off.

The winner will earn the right to compete in Division I league next year.

Wanderers had a disastrous season, failing to win any game.
