THE Rukungiri resident district commissioner, Dan Kaguta, has accused the Police of helping criminals to evade justice.

Kaguta said the law-enforcers were mismanaging cases, enabling the criminals to gain freedom and wreak more havoc.

Addressing the district council meeting recently, Kaguta cited a case in Nyakishenyi sub-county where a suspect, Izadaro, who had 11 cases at the Police station but had been set free, was killed by a mob.

According to Kaguta, Izadaro had been reported to the Police over allegations of murder, rape and theft of cows among other things, but had found his way out of detention after bribing the Police.

“I will not allow such incompetence to go on as long as I am the RDC.
“The Police should work or leave the force,” Kaguta told the attentive council.

“It is such actions of the Police that have aggravated mob justice cases.”

Kaguta also warned the traffic officers against taking bribes, saying he would soon lay traps for them.

“I have heard every vehicle is forced to pay some money.
“The Police wake up in the morning and go to the roads to extort money from the motorists.

“It is a matter of time and you will fall into my trap,” he warned.
Kaguta said the bribes ranged from sh3,000 to sh5,000 for pick-ups and sh10,000 for buses.

The meeting was attended by the Rukungiri Police Station chief, Stanley Tibakanya, who represented the district Police commander, Godence Ovuru Binega.

Councillors and members of the district executive were also present.
