THE High Court has awarded sh94m to former Samia-Bugwe North MP Aggrey Awori as costs in an election petition against Steven Wasike Mugeni.

Wasike (NRM) beat Awori during the 2006 parliamentary elections but the former dragged him to the High Court for failure to lawfully resign as a public officer before the nominations.

The court ruled in Awori’s favour
Wasike then challenged the verdict in the Court of Appeal which upheld the lower court’s decision.

In August 2007, the Supreme Court also ruled against Mugeni and declared his seat vacant.

An excited Awori yesterday told The New Vision that he had asked for sh200m but his lawyer, Wasike’s lawyers and the High Court Registrar agreed on sh94m, which Justice John Baptist Katutsi awarded.

“This is just the beginning. I expect another sh94m each from the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. That will give me at least sh282m,” Awori said
NRM Secretary General Amama Mbabazi recently assured Wasike that the party would pay his court costs. Campaigns for the Samia-Bugwe North by-elections are already in progress, but Awori, who recently abandoned the UPC for the ruling NRM, declined to contest.
