AT LEAST fifteen people have been sedated with chloroform and their property stolen in Kampala-Kisoro buses over the past two months, prompting the Kisoro district chairman, Dr Philemon Mateke, to appeal for Police protection.

Motorele Hospital management said they handled four of the victims last week while Kisoro Hospital reportedly handled six in November and this month.

At least five are said to have been rushed to health centres along the Kampala-Kisoro route.
Mateke also urged passengers to carry as little cash as possible.

“For how long shall we tell them to stop carrying money in pillows and mattresses?” he asked
Mateke has appealed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to find ways of detecting dangerous chemicals in passengers’ luggage, especially in the overnight buses.
“We cannot afford to subject our people to thuggery, more so after they have paid for the bus services,” he said.

On average, six buses leave Kampala at midnight daily and reach Kisoro at 8:00am.

A desk officer at Gateway Bus, one of the bus services, said, “It is true but it is not unique to Kisoro. It happens on other routes as well.”

Travellers blamed the night schedule and some suggested that night bus service be banned, but Mateke rejected this proposal, saying security should be beefed up instead.
