THE Rapid Response Unit of the Police has arrested 17 suspected thugs in various operations in which three guns and a pistol were recovered.

Unit boss David Magara told the press on Friday that they foiled a plot to rob Stanbic Bank of sh1.7b that was being taken to Kitgum and Pader districts from Gulu on December 20.

“We got information that they were going to rob the money and started trailing them,” Magara said at the unit head office in Kireka, a Kampala suburb.

The suspects, he said, were staying in a Gulu hotel as they laid strategies for the mission earlier planned for December 19, a public holiday.

“They wanted to ambush the vehicle at Aswa Bridge but we kept monitoring them until we thwarted their plans,” Magara said.

The suspects, all from Kampala, are Robinson Okoshi, a private security guard attached to G4S, Isma Mukasa Nabeta, Abdu Mubiru, Sam Kalema, Isaac Mulema, Peter Kiberu and Joseph Kakeeto.

The Police also recovered two bottles allegedly containing chloroform and four packets of juice reportedly doused with chloroform.

Meanwhile, Magara has revealed that six other suspects have been detained over allegations of terrorising residents of Mubende. A gun containing 18 bullets was recovered from them. They are John Ssekito, Vicent Luvuma, Charles Irumba, Chris Ssekabo, Sylvester Ssekitoleko and John Mayanja, a special Police constable (SPC).

Also in detention are Salim Kazoora and Suli Basalirwa, accused of shooting and injuring Umar Makumbi before robbing him of sh35m in in Mukono on December 23.
