PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has defended his wife Janet’s candidature for Ruhama County parliamentary seat, saying she was not contesting for personal gain, but to assist the people.

Museveni was on Sunday speaking at a New Year’s Day thanksgiving service led by the Rev. Can. Yorokamu Kamomo at Kyamate church in Ntungamo district.
“It pains her to see children in Africa living in poor conditions and she comes out to help. Janet as a person has 500 head of cattle. She is looking for nothing,” Museveni said.

This was Museveni’s first visit to Ntungamo district since the First Lady declared her intention to vie for the Ruhama MP seat, which is held by Museveni’s erstwhile friend Augustine Ruzindana.

Museveni said he met Ruhama elders in Rwakitura on New Year’s eve to discuss Janet’s suitability.

“I met the elders and told them that if there is a problem about her candidature, we can get someone else since there is still time before the parliamentary nominations. But the elders told me that they want Janet to stand,” he said.

He said he was the first person from his family to get into government. “No one in my family has ever been even a parish or gombolola (sub-county) chief. We are cattle keepers. My children completed their studies and none of them is in government apart from my son Muhoozi (Kainerugaba) who loves the military.”

“What took us to the bush is to ensure that people are well. Movement is for all. But poverty eradication is hard. This is why I fell out with some people like your MP,” Museveni said.

The First Lady said, “God has brought us back to Ntungamo. We have been away from you but God has decided we return and work with you. Let us not be like the Israelites who turned against God after he led them out of slavery in Egypt. Let us not forget that it is the Movement that brought us hope. Let us not forget and lead ourselves in another political ditch. ”
