The Police will not provide security to individual candidates but will guard all campaign venues in Kampala district.

A candidate who feels that he/she needs personal security will ask for it from relevant security officers.

This was revealed yesterday by the head of security in Kampala district, Dr. Stanley Kinyatta and the regional Police commander, Benson Oyo Nyeko.

They were giving guidelines to mayoral and parliamentary candidates in Kampala at a meeting chaired by the returning officer, James Sseggane, at City Hall.

Kinyatta said the Police had limited manpower and could not guard every candidate.

He, however, assured candidates that the Police would ensure that rallies of opponents are not held close to each other to avoid violence, intimidation and unnecessary clashes.

Sseggane advised candidates from the same political parties to convene joint rallies to save on time, avoid clashes with opponents and also to enable the police to provide security.

The parliamentary candidates were given up to this morning to hand in their proposals on the campaign programmes, which will be harmonised with those for the mayoral race and district women candidates.

Mayoral campaigns kicked off on Monday and for parliamentary candidates, rallies will begin on Friday.

Nyeko also cautioned candidates against campaigning or pasting candidates’ posters in army barracks.
