BUSHENYI district Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) members on Tuesday met party officials from the headquarters at Uganda house in Kampala, to solve the issue of Bushenyi UPC executive committee not supporting Miria Obote’s candidature.

The closed meeting was held at Hot springs hotel in Ishaka town and was attended by Mary Tiberondwa, wife of the late Adonia Tiberondwa, Bushenyi UPC chairman Edward Rurangaranga and party official Night Kulabako.

Officials from Kampala stayed outside for some time to give a chance to Bushenyi members to come to a decision over the matter.

The district UPC executive had resolved not to support Miria Obote’s candidature, saying it was illegal.

A source said members wanted officials from the headquarters to first respond to their concerns before Miria Obote goes to the district to campaign.

“We also want Cecilia Ogwal to get back the Lira Municipality seat instead of Obote’s son James Akena because Ogwal is among the people who have kept UPC alive,” said a member who preferred anonymity.

Rurangaranga had told journalists on Monday that he would welcome Miria Obote as a friend but not as the official party presidential candidate.
