NRM releases list of MP candidates

PARLIAMENT Speaker Edward Ssekandi and his deputy Rebecca Kadaga are among the NRM candidates endorsed to contest for the 2006 parliamentary elections, according to the final list drawn by the party’s secretariat.

PARLIAMENT Speaker Edward Ssekandi and his deputy Rebecca Kadaga are among the NRM candidates endorsed to contest for the 2006 parliamentary elections, according to the final list drawn by the party’s secretariat.

Ssekandi, who has been at odds to state his political position because of his former ties with the Democratic Party, is listed as the sole NRM candidate for Bukoto Central constituency.

Ssekandi’s NRM card number is NC 02505368. All NRM candidates except unopposed ones will have to go through primaries slated for December 7.

First Lady Janet Museveni, who is launching her political career, has been cleared to contest for Ruhama county represented by FDC’s Augustine Ruzindana. Five NRM aspirants for the seat pulled out in her favour.

NRM card holders who are not seeking re-election are former Vice-President Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, transport state minister Andraule Awuzu, Basaliza Mwesigye (Burahya), Beatrice Kiraso, Hamlet Kabushenga, Tom Bagalana and Kibale Wambi.

Radio Simba journalist Joshua Kyalimpa has been endorsed to contest for Bunya south currently represented by Bagalana.

National Political Commissar Dr. Crispus Kiyonga who recently lost the post of secretary general to defence minister Amama Mbabazi, is the sole NRM candidate for Bukonzo West.

Kampala Central MP and housing state minister Francis Babu faces a challenge from Dennis Serugo.

In East Moyo, First Deputy Prime Minister Lt. Gen. Moses Ali will face businessman Santos Eruaga.

Former internal security chief and ambassador to China Phillip Idro was cleared to contest against Entandiikwa state minister Agard Didi for West Moyo.

Former Soroti resident district commissioner Musa Ecweru is the sole NRM candidate for Amuria, currently represented by Ben Etonu.

Former Police chief John Cossy Odomel was endorsed to contest for Pallisa county against Louis Opange, while Soroti LC5 chairman Emilly Otekat is eyeing Serere county, currently represented by Charles Koluo.

Information minister Dr. Nsaba Buturo faces a challenge from the former seat holder Eddie Kwizera, a State House employee. State House legal aide Joseph Luzige is to take on Vincent Nyanzi for Busuju county.

Some of the unopposed candidates are Mbabazi who is likely to face a stiff challenge from Forum for Democratic Change official Garuga Musinguzi and Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya.
