CONFUSION reigned on Sunday with CECAFA announcing the Senior Challenge Cup would now be switched to Ethiopia, throwing Uganda and Sudan into uncertainty as one of them would not host any of the council tournaments this year.
Uganda had initially been tipped to host the Senior Challenge Cup, a move that CECAFA secretary Nicholas Musonye said last week had been changed on their request to have Sudan host the event and Uganda stage the club championships.
However, in a sudden twist of events, Musonye said yesterday the CECAFA congress in Cairo had decided to replace Ethiopia as hosts of the event, to the chargrin of FUFA officials who attended the meeting.
Musonye said the decision to switch the tournament was reached after the Ethiopian federation claimed that stringent foreign exchange laws in their country were giving them trouble raising the sponsorship fee.
They appealed to the regional soccer body headed by Denis Obua to be awarded the event while they lobby for a change of law.
In an unprecented move, Musonye (left) said Sudan would host the Kagame clubs cup, sealing Uganda’s fate of staging any event organised by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association in 2006.
The Senior Challenge Cup is sponsored by Ethioipian tycoon, Sheikh Al Amoudi to the tune of US $500,000 spread over three years.
