JACKLINE Cherutwo announced her claim to the national junior title by winning the women 5km Bukwa road race in Amananka, Bukwa district on Saturday.
The 15-year old Arua Athletics Club runner, who finished 17th in the Eldoret cross-country early this month, clocked 18 minutes 27.6 seconds in the high altitude Bukwa district near the Kenyan border.
“It was a tough race but I am prepared. I am used to the course,” said Cherutwo, a promising long distance runner.
She beat standard High’s Nancy Chepkwemoi and Doreen Chesang to the top winner’s prize offered by Canadian Karl Kerlstead.
Isaac Kiprop managed to defend last year’s title in the absence of Boniface Kiprop, watching on the sidelines and Moses Kipsiro, who stayed in Europe nursing an injury.
The third edition Bukwa race attracted 120 athletes, including ten who were breastfeeding mothers.
