OVER 200 patients at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital sleep on the floor due to shortage of beds.
The medical superintendent, Dr. Nathan Kenya, said the hospital was designed to admit 300 patients.
He said the congestion crisis drew the attention of the state minister for health, Capt. Mike Mukula, who promised to address it.
Speaking at the end-of- year party for the hospital staff on Friday at Tropic Inn garden in Masaka municipality, Kenya said the improved services and drug availability attracted patients from Rakai, Kalangala and Sembabule districts, in addition to Masaka and Mpigi districts.
He, however, noted that the hospital was still facing an acute staff shortage to serve the increasing number of patients.
On the poor shape of the mortuary, Kenya said the Masaka Municipal Council was to blame, adding that it was not the responsibility of the hospital to rehabilitate the facility.
He proposed that the hospital and the municipality team up to build a modern mortuary.
Kenya thanked the Ministry of health for improving the hospital logistical supplies and warned clinical staff against being rude to patients.
