KAMPALA’S 2005 second-best O-level student, Edward Kayongo, was working as a mechanic at the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication as he waited for his results.

He has been doing vocational training at the ministry since early December 2005, where he made oil tanks and billboard frames.

Clad in dirty brown corduroy jeans and an army-green T-shirt, the second-best student of Mengo Senior School had no idea that the exams were out and that he had excelled.

He looked suspicious on seeing The New Vision crew. But when he heard the news, the calm Kayongo erupted into joy.

“I am not so surprised because I was doing well at school but I am very happy that I and my school have produced the best students in Kampala,” he said while smiling broadly.

Though Kayongo loves metal work, which is in line with engineering, he said his dream was to become a pharmacist.

Kayongo, whose father died while he was in primary three, said he emerged second in the mock examinations, which gave him courage and determination to maintain the grip.

He commended his mother, Kayiwa, for paying his school fees, and his teachers, Kunguvu Mukasa and Peter Allio, for encouragement. The teachers connected him to the ministry for vocational work.

Kayongo is due to get a certificate in the training.

“Though I am not being paid here, I am gaining skills,” he said, adding that he worked hard as a tribute to his late sister, Olivia Namale, who died a week before the exams.

Kayongo got eight in eight with distinctions in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, additional mathematics, technical drawing, metal work, geography, history and English. He said constant revision with the help of his elder brother, Henry Kayiwa, and revising The New Vision O-level pullout helped him excel. His mother was so delighted on hearing the news. “God is great, praise the Lord,” she shouted.
