Changing the telephone numbering will take effect on February 1, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has said.
“Subscriber numbers will be expanded from the current six to seven digits effective February 1 for all mobile phone numbers as well as the MTN fixed lines. From April 15, uganda telecom’s fixed lines’ numbering will also change,” Patrick Masambu UCC’s executive director said in a statement.
According to the changes, all customers will have to add 2 at the beginning of existing numbers. For example, if a person’s current number has been 071 875238, it will change to 071 2 875238.
“In all cases, the national significant number length (area code+network code + subscriber numbers) will be expanded from eight to nine digits,” he said.
Masambu (left) said the changes are meant to standardise the country’s number length and cater for future growth.
“The numbering plan has been expanded to cater for the increase in the customer base. For already issued numbers, this has been achieved by inserting the number 2 before the subscriber number to make it seven digits,” he said.
