THE Police in Jinja on Wednesday foiled a highway robbery after a fierce shootout, wounding one of the suspected thugs.

Four toy guns made out of banana stems and a fake sign-post bearing the inscription “STOP POLICE CHECK”, were recovered during the 3:00am operation at Mailo Mbili, on the Jinja-Iganga highway.

The four thugs are believed to be part of a gang that has been terrorising motorists and travellers on the highway.

Jinja district Police chief Fred Ayebale declined to identify the wounded suspect, saying it would jeopardise investigations. The suspect was shot in the right leg.

Ayebale urged the public, especially medical personnel, to report anybody who discreetly seeks medical attention from them.
“We highly suspect that other suspects still at large could have been injured too,” he said.

He said the suspect would be prosecuted as soon as investigations are completed.
