THE UN children’s agency deputy executive director, Rimah Salah (above), is in Uganda to assess the humanitarian situation in Kitgum and Gulu districts. A statement from the UNICEF Kampala office said yesterday Salah’s trip would centre on the most vulnerable populations, including children and women.

Minister visits

French foreign affairs minister Philippe Douste-Blazy arrives on Saturday to assess the humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged northern region.
He will meet president Museveni and foreign affairs minister Sam Kuteesa in Entebbe.

‘No posters

THE Electoral commission in Mbarara town has prohibited the pinning of presidential and parliamentary candidates’ posters at night. The district EC registrar, Richard kamugisha, told reporters at his office in Kamukuzi on Wednesday that the official time for ending campaigns was 6:00pm and pinning of candidates’ posters was part of campaigning.

Cheeye snubs

KAMPALA — The Director of Economic Affairs in the Internal Security organisation, Teddy Seezi cheeye, yesterday snubbed the commission probing the Global Fund mismanagement and is to pay the bill of the day’s sitting. With Cheeye, the only witness for the day absent, the commission chairman, Justice James Ogoola, adjourned the hearing to February 13. Cheeye was expected to produce his accountant, Sam Kiberu, to account for sh120m.

Besigye case

KAMPALA — Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye today returns to court for a trial on the treason case with 22 others. The deputy Director of Public prosecution, Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, yesterday said he was ready to produce the witnesses. The defence team expressed readiness for the trial.

Moody rejects

NAIROBI — Kenyan Vice-President Moody Awori insisted on Thursday he would not resign after being linked to a multi-million dollar corruption scandal. “I am not resigning, I’ve committed no crime,” he told a news conference, a day after former cabinet colleague, David Mwiraria, quit his job as finance minister following accusations that he was involved in the so-called “Anglo Leasing” scam.

KCC tenders
KAMPALA — The City Council (KCC) has not received any communication from the president directing it to stop awarding tenders, imposing taxes and disposing of or selling property. “As an institution, we must get an official communication and see how we can implement it because we are operating under the law. Therefore the status quo remains,” acting mayor Hasib K. Takuba said.

Kanyeihamba for AU

KAMPALA — Supreme Court Judge George Kanyeihamba has been nominated to contest for a seat on the panel of 11 judges for the African Court on Human and People’s Rights.

Two charged
BUGANDA Road Court yesterday charged two guards of KPI Security with defacing the campaign posters of President Yoweri Museveni. Paul Ochan and Samuel Agenonga, both from Makindye division in Kampala, denied the charges before Magistrate Gastus Mugoya.
Prosecution said the two pulled down the posters at Royal Complex Building on January 30.

New stations

FORTY-seven new polling stations have been created in Hoima district, bringing to 239 the total number of polling stations in the district. Erasmus Kimbowa, the district returning officer, yesterday said more stations were created because the old ones were “abnormally congested”.

UPC advises
UPC supporters were on Tuesday advised against voting for candidates who deserted the party.
The call was made by the MP candidate for Kole, John Ogwang Ber Idwogo.

Babu blasts
KAMPALA Central parliamentary candidate Francis Edward Babu has accused his opponent Erias Lukwago of ferrying supporters to rallies. Babu, the housing state minister and incumbent MP, on Wednesday also accused Lukwago of abusing electoral laws and campaigning past the official campaign time.

Varsity opens

UGANDA Christian University, Mukono has opened a new dinning hall to cater for its growing number of students. Speaking at its dedication service this week, vice-chancellor Stephen Noll said the state-of-the-art hall would accommodate up to 1,000 students at a time.

War blamed
THE LRA insurgency in the north is dashing Uganda’s hopes of achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals of reducing the high mortality and morbidity rates by 2015, district health inspectors said at a workshop in Mukono on Friday.
