BONIFACE Kiprop has been given a lifeline to compete for the IAAF Golden League $1m jackpot after race organisers included the 3000m/5000m on the events for the jackpot. The Golden League starts June 2 in Oslo, reports Norman Katende.
The distance races had been omitted on the earlier list but after Friday’s meeting of the IAAF Golden League Working Group, which consists of IAAF representatives, Golden League Meeting Organisers and representatives from Broadcasting and Marketing partners, it was decided that there should be a distance race in the absence of other international races this year.
“With neither an IAAF World Championships in Athletics nor an Olympic Games next summer, we believe that the IAAF Golden League has an even bigger role to play in promoting the sport of athletics. For this reason, we concluded that it is important to add a men’s distance running event and to widen the opportunities for participation. IAAF Golden League meeting organisers will now be able to present either a 3000m or 5000m event,†IAAF President Lamine Diack announced.
