How credible are the Movement’s promises?

SIR – I have read several letters attacking opposition politicians for allegedly making empty and untenable promises. The impression created is that President Yoweri Museveni’s campaign is bereft of empty and untenable promises.

SIR – I have read several letters attacking opposition politicians for allegedly making empty and untenable promises. The impression created is that President Yoweri Museveni’s campaign is bereft of empty and untenable promises. However, I have identified some.
For starters, is there any chance in a million that every household in this country will be earning sh20m per annum by 2011 if Museveni wins? What about the dubious claim in the NRM manifesto promising zero tolerance for corruption? A quick look at some of the unintended beneficiaries of the Global Fund money shows that some faithful cadres of the NRM have prima facie cases of abuse of office, causing financial loss and embezzlement of funds. Why doesn’t the government demonstrate this zero tolerance by instituting criminal cases against these people to prove that this time it will not be business as usual? Besides, what guarantee is there that the incumbent will not renege on his promises the way he did with the 2001 manifesto that promised he was seeking his last term to, inter alia, ensure orderly succession?
So if the opposition is fooling people as alleged by Mary Karungi in your February 1 issue, ditto for the incumbent.
