KAYUNGA town council has been hit by a water shortage, forcing residents to resort to wells and other unprotected sources, writes Vision Reporter.
Hundreds of empty jerrycans were on Sunday lined up at various water drawing points in Kayunga west and Bukolooto.
“There is nowhere to go. Our nearby wells have dried up due to the dry season. We were relying on tap water, which is unreliable these days,” Ntenjeru north MP Sarah Nansubuga said.
The district water officer, William Ssebaale, attributed the shortage to the ever-increasing demand for water in the area.
“The population in the area has increased tremendously and there are a number of development projects which have come up,” he told journalists at his office at Ntenjeru Kayunga district headquarters on Friday.
Ssebaale said his department would put in place a water plant to draw water from the pumping station at Ntooke Ssezibwa falls.
President Yoweri Museveni recently assured Kayunga residents of the government’s commitment to supply clean water to Kangulumira and Busaana sub-counties.
Recently, Japan International Corporation Association promised to drill over 80 boreholes to end water shortage in Kayunga.
