THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) party tops electoral offences, details released by the Police indicate.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said it was not true that they were targeting any particular candidate or party, especially the FDC.

“This can be further explained by the number of cases that we have so far handled,” he said.

He said they had handled 193 cases against NRM, FDC 102, DP 12, one each against CP, UPC and JEEMA, while others had 123 cases.

He said 140 cases registered concern defacing posters, assault 64, general 57, threatening violence 52, election malpractice 30, inciting violence 18, malicious damage 18, forgery/uttering false documents 12, bribery 10 and eight for rigging.

Mugenyi warned politicians against forming illegal groups under the guise of protecting votes.

He said the so-called youth brigades/volunteers were illegal groups whose members would be arrested and prosecuted if sighted near polling stations.

He said the Police Force is the lead security agency to see that the elections are held in a free, fair and transparent environment.

“The Police Force has the capacity and manpower to ensure that the election process is smooth,” Mugenyi said.
