THE lands, water and environment minister has said Dr. Kizza Besigye supported the Army Council’s decision to send the UPDF into Congo.

Kahinda Otafiire said Besigye, who is campaigning for the presidency on the FDC ticket, was wrong to accuse the Government of taking the army to Congo in 2000 when he participated in all meetings that planned for the security measure.

“We have minutes for these meetings that include his contributions. Let him tell the world if he ever opposed the decision. Did the army’s going to Congo become bad after he left government?” Otafiire asked.

He was addressing a workshop on reviving of cooperative societies, attended by local leaders and cooperative society members in Busoga region at Najja Annex Guest House in Iganga on Saturday.

Otafiire said Besigye, who was then a senior advisor on military affairs to the Minister of Defence, had wanted to lead the UPDF mission to Congo but the Army Council chose him (Otafiire).

He attacked the other presidential candidates Ssebaana Kizito and Miria Obote, saying they were too weak to lead Uganda.

He said Ssebaana had failed to manage Kampala City Council and could not think of managing Uganda, while Miria looked on helplessly as her husband Dr. Apollo Milton Obote lost power twice to the army.
