WORKERS MP Dr. Sam Lyomoki has petitioned the Attorney General, Dr. Khiddu Makubuya, to review the current workers parliamentary election regulations.

Lyomoki wants the law to accommodate the representation of the Central Organisation of Free Trade Unions (COFTU) as a separate electoral college.

In a January 11 letter to Makubuya, Lyomoki said a sizeable proportion of workers in the country no longer belonged to the National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU), making the union lose its mandate to represent workers.

“Any arrangement for election of workers’ MPs that excludes a number of trade unions is in conflict with the spirit of trade union laws that sought to enlarge the category of employees eligible for membership of trade unions in order to provide for a legitimate forum for their representation,” he said.

He said when COFTU leaders met President Yoweri Museveni last year, he promised that the coming elections would consider representatives from COFTU.
