TWO Forum for democratic Change (FDC) supporters who were allegedly knocked by military trucks in Anthony zone, Mukono, were yesterday admitted to Mulago hospital.

Robert Mugerwa and Medi Kyesswa, admitted in ward 3B and 3A, were steadily recovering from the injuries.

However, the Police and the army yesterday refuted claims that seven armoured trucks drove into Dr. Kizza Besigye’s crowd on Sunday.

FDC insists that the army trucks that were heading to Kampala from Jinja with heavily-armed military personal made their way through the crowd that was waiting for Besigye.

FDC’s presidential assistant Kamala kana-mwanji described the accident as callous.

“Three people were injured and rushed to Mukono and Mulago hospitals in critical condition. Two had broken limbs while another had serious bruises,” he said.

Police spokesman Assuman Mugenyi yesterday said the three were injured following a stampede and not due to an accident.

“This occurred when a crowd that had gathered along the roadside when Besigye made a stop-over on his way to Kyetume and Nkonkojeru saw six military jeeps that were on the highway from Jinja towards Kampala.”

He identified the injured as Kenneth Katungi, Oliver Babirye and Mugerwa. He said the victims were discharged after receiving treatment at Makula Health Clinic.

UPDF spokesman Maj. Felix Kulayigye yesterday said a stampede ensued after Besigye’s supporters saw military trucks.

“No one was knocked or rammed into as reported. It’s educative to note that the Police gave an account of what happened and the police account is correct.”

Kulayigye said the trend was aimed at smearing the UPDF with accusations.

FDC’s Anne Mugisha said, “In spite the fact that the incident happened in broad daylight, in the presence of the candidate and his supporters, the Police went ahead to falsify their report about this incident in a press release that sought to water down the deadly assault and its consequences,” she said.
